Joan Roque, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Westminster College, Utah. She completed her bachelor’s degree in chemistry at the University of Puerto Rico at Cayey and her graduate degree in chemistry at North Carolina State University. After completing her PhD, she received an NIH Research Supplement to Support Diversity and completed her postdoc at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She then joined Westminster College and learned about student-centered teaching strategies, including POGIL, which she has been using since then. Joan is also passionate about increasing diversity in higher education; hence she serves as the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Professional Development Faculty Fellow, is a McNair student mentor, co-leads the Faculty Racial Justice Reading Group at Westminster College, and serves as the chair of the “POGIL Addressing Equity” recruiting group. In her free time, Joan enjoys her master’s-level coursework, spends time watching tv and playing videogames with her husband, and is a proud parent of a chihuahua mix, Jack, and two parrots, Amy and JJ (a parrotlet and a caique).
